Two Histories, One Home: Understanding Family Backgrounds in Marital Counselling

Abstract

A marriage joins two people whose earlier family relationships remain present in their expectations of intimacy, authority, money, conflict, faith, and belonging. Yet marital counselling can either overstate the power of childhood, treating spouses as prisoners of their upbringing, or ignore family history and address only the latest quarrel. This conceptual article develops a Ghanaian pastoral approach to the space between those errors. It draws critically on family systems and marital scholarship published from 1988 to 1997, African Christian theology, and close readings of Genesis 2:24, Ruth 1, Mark 3:31–35, Ephesians 5:21–33, and related texts. Its original contribution is the Two Histories, One Home framework, which examines five linked domains: the remembered household, the inherited rule, the present encounter, the extended family boundary, and the chosen household practice. The framework treats history as a source of questions rather than a verdict about a person. It attends to kinship obligations without assuming one uniform Ghanaian culture, and it makes safety and equal dignity conditions of any joint marital work. An illustrative case shows how disagreements over remittances, privacy, and respect can carry different meanings for spouses raised in different households. The article offers implications for premarital formation, pastoral counselling, theological education, and research, while distinguishing a proposed interpretive framework from an empirically validated intervention. Keywords: family of origin; marriage; Ghana; pastoral counselling; kinship; Christian theology
