Abstract
Affection and commitment draw many people into marriage, yet neither assures a safe, durable, or mutually sustaining relationship. This integrative conceptual article examines emotional maturity as a set of relational capacities through which spouses notice and regulate emotion, recognize one another as distinct persons, accept responsibility, negotiate power, repair injury, and seek help when necessary. It brings longitudinal couple research, intervention evidence, Ghanaian studies of premarital counselling and intimate partner violence, and a contextual reading of Christian Scripture into conversation. The article argues that marriage sustainability should be understood as the continuing capacity of a relationship to support dignity, safety, reciprocity, adaptation, and honest repair, rather than duration alone. It proposes the DIGNITY framework for Ghanaian pastoral counselling: discern safety and context; identify emotional patterns; give language to needs; negotiate roles and boundaries; interrupt harmful cycles; tend repair and support; and yield to evaluation and referral. The framework is a practice proposal, not an empirically validated treatment. The analysis challenges romantic idealism, gendered assignments of emotional labour, and spiritual advice that treats endurance as an unconditional good. It recommends culturally attentive assessment, shared emotional responsibility, explicit safeguarding, and collaboration between pastoral and mental health services. Love gains durable form when spouses can act responsibly under strain, but the preservation of a marriage must never take precedence over a person's safety. Keywords: emotional maturity; marriage sustainability; Ghana; pastoral counselling; emotion regulation; intimate partner violence
