Abstract
Churches in Ghana occupy an important, though ethically complex, position in the lives of people experiencing psychological distress. This conceptual and integrative review examines how their contribution can become more dependable without turning congregations into unregulated treatment centres. Selected Ghanaian research is brought into dialogue with African scholarship, psychology, practical theology, and international guidance published mainly between 2010 and 2023. The synthesis distinguishes evidence about religious coping and professional interventions from claims about congregational effectiveness. It argues that ecclesial trust is an entrusted responsibility whose value depends on whether it strengthens agency, safety, belonging, and access to appropriate care. A Ghanaian Congregational Mental Health Partnership Framework is proposed, comprising five responsibilities: creating a hospitable environment, recognising distress and responding within competence, providing consent-based pastoral support, facilitating professional care, and sustaining inclusion and accountability. Its distinctive contribution is to connect theological commitments with observable organisational duties, including the right to decline religious intervention without losing practical support. The framework requires adaptation and evaluation; it is not a validated intervention. Priorities include co-design with people with lived experience, supervision, feasible referrals, safeguarding, and attention to poverty and unequal power. Mental health promotion becomes a credible expression of Christian ministry when compassion is supported by competent action and accountable institutions. Keywords: mental health promotion; pastoral counselling; Ghana; congregational care; religious coping; collaborative care
